Resource

What is a MODS Resource; What Types of Things are MODS Resources?

MODS aims to provide a set of data elements[1] that help facilitate the description[2] of all types of information media[3]. Although MODS has commonly been used to describe the types of materials curated by memory institutions[4], it is designed to be used in any environment where there is a need to model complex descriptive data. Examples of resources that might be suited to description in MODS include:

 

  • textual materials such as books and manuscripts
  • maps
  • notated music
  • sound and video recordings
  • web resources[5] and web archives
  • graphic materials
  • born-digital resources
  • mixed and multimedia objects

 

From a formal perspective, MODS defines the following classes of resources:
